A flight from French Polynesia to France set a new world record for longest scheduled flight with fare-paying passengers on-board. It transited 9,675 miles over a period of 16 hours. The flight normally stops in the U.S., but with COVID restrictions in place, they planned for and made the full flight in one go.

The funny part is that it counts as a “domestic” flight on paper...

Cool. I’m from Hawaii but my great uncle went there and married a Tahitian lady. I don’t think I took any military flights longer than that.

I think I’d rather get the virus than a 16 h flight. :|

That’s a ride for sure!

Dang. That’s amazing. I’ve flown Air Tahiti Nui twice, but both on the older Airbus A340s, from L.A.. Definitely one of the more fun airlines I’ve ever been on. Of course the destination is pretty good too.
We’re hoping to go back there again some day.

Imagine being stuck in the middle seat.

Sixteen hours of discomfort versus how many days? The flu had me down for over a week. I think I’d take the 16 hours.

You don’t get the corona, but you do get DVT.

No way. Long haul flights are usually so much comfier than short domestic ones it more than makes up for the length. I did 16 and a half from SFO to Singapore and it was a breeze.

Okay sure. I’m just thinking of how uncomfortable those flights are for me.

Precisely.

Okay. Now imagine you sit in a coach seat two feet from the bulk head and can’t get out of that seat for 16 hours, not even to go to the bathroom, so that you have to empty your leg bag and have someone carry that away for you.
I may be exaggerating a bit, but maybe not as much as you might think.

I’m gonna guess everyone had their own row, like the old days....

The longest flight I’ve ever taken was Chicago -> Beijing (or maybe the reverse), but honestly I don’t think taking on a few more hours would be a big deal, and almost certainly preferable to having to stop at an airport for a few hours in the middle.

I’m glad I’m not faced with the choice though.
